Ray (Tooby) Gant
Ray Gant, a long time member of the 3 Telecommunications Unit Association, passed away on Monday, 26th July 2010. Ray was laid to rest at Belconnen on Friday, 30th July.
Ray Gant served at 3 Telecommunications Unit around 1948 when he and his team erected the arial farm. Ray was a radio engineer and it is believed that he was commissioned after his term at the unit. For those who remember, Ray was in attendance the day we had our picnic/AGM at the old unit before it was completely dismantled.
Tracie Hamilton(953)
Tracie Hamilton passed away whilst on duty in Indonesia. Tracie was a SIGSOP who, whilst in the RAAF, served at 3TU and various other units. She later discharged from the RAAF to continue work in the Defence community. She was in her 40's. Her service was held on Tuesday 13 April at Integrity Funeral Parlour, Parkwood, Qld.
Robert (Ned) Squiers (359)
A very large number of members turned up for the funeral of Robert John (Ned) Squires which was held at Karrakatta Cemetary. Ned was very active in the S.E.S., the RAAF Association, his Lodge as well as the 3 Telecommunications Association. Ned loved fishing and was also a keen golfer.
Although it was an extremely hot day members wore their unit tie and in many cases miniature medals. During the service the bugle played the last post and the Ode was read. The tune "Amazing Grace" was also played on the bag pipes. After the service those attending adjoined back to the home of Val Ashman for afternoon tea.
Ray (Crumpet) Grey (379)
Ray Gray was laid to rest on Friday, 26th March 2010. Ray would not have been known to a number of the younger members of 3 Telu but was well known to all the older ones. Ray had a great sense of humour and was very easy to work with. From the time of my arrival at 3 Telu until my first tour of duty overseas I was on the same doggo watch as Ray.
Ray saw service in the RAF during world war two. In 1956, as a member of 3 Telu, he did a tour to Hong Kong. While in Hong Kong Ray represented Hong Kong RAF in the Far East Air Force Boxing championships held at RAF Seletar in Singapore. In his later years Ray lived close to the Rosehill Golf Course and did his regular exercise walking the boundries of the course. He was, for many years, a regular attended at our monthly get together. For golfers he was a good supplier of balls.

Seven old 3 Telu compatriots spent a fabulous three day golfing in the South West. Abby reports that they stayed in a very well appointed and comfortable chalet at the Myalup Beach Caravan Park and played a total of 36 holes at the Binningup and Harvey Golf Courses. They BBQ'd, imbibed amber and red fluids and played poker (for very modest stakes) and laughted - all to excess. Abby reported that each needed to wear tin helmets for most of the trip in order to avoid the shrapnel. He reported that they were memorable and fun filled days and, God willing, would be repeated again next year. From other sources it is reported that Abbys handicap will be severely cut for the next meeting.
